Featured project examples for Algae Landscape Designs
Photoreactor Farm Tower. Designed for the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) by Gregoire Diehl, Smoothcore Architects. The algae fields are made of illuminated vertical glass tubes with algae in them.
Clepsydra Urban Farming. Entered into the 2011 Buckminster Fuller Challenge by Bruno Viganò and Florencia Costa. Clepsydra serves as an urban development tool to provide food security and community.
Green Transformer. A solar-powered algae refinery that floats on water, designed for the 2010 Seoul International Design Competition by Yi Liu, Luo Jing and Jiang Yu-ning.
The Diatom Project. Designed for the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) by Thomas Laureyssens. The installation consists of sculptures of an enlarged diatom stone fossil placed on the desert sand.
Hydrogenase – algae farm for biohydrogen airship. Featured on Awesome Architecture is the Hydrogenase bio hydrogen airship for the future by Vincent Callebaut.
Living Algae Concept Building. Designed for the 2010 Taiwan Tower Conceptual International Competition by creators Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham, part of the CRAB team in London.
Featured project examples for Algae Production Systems
An integrated spirulina algae microfarm in France. Located 3 km from the Normandy Coast. With four 50 m2 algae ponds, one pond is grown with organic nutrients from a biogas digestor.
Grow your own microfarm. At his spirulina greenhouse in the South of France, Jean Paul Jourdan demonstrated how he grows, harvests and dries spirulina, producing a tasty food product.
Family and community farms in France. Philippe Calamand built two greenhouses with a pond area of about 135 square meters at his homestead, producing about thirty 200gm packages per day.
Spirulina ladies of Chad. Kanembu women traditionally harvest spirulina from Lake Boudou Andja to make dihé. Producing more than 250 tons per year, nearly the world’s highest volume and certainly lowest cost.
Village farm in West Africa. A project developed by Dr. Ripley D. Fox in the village of Farende, Togo. The design for the Integrated System won the 1987 European Award for Appropriate Environmental Technology.
Lake harvest system in Myanmar. Seasonal harvesting and processing of spirulina from natural lakes, by Min Thein. Myanmar Pharmaceutical Industries produces 150 dry tons in 60 days, February to April.
Commercial farm in Thailand. Boonsom Spirulina Farm near Chiang Mai is the largest in Thailand, with 40,000 square meters of growing pond area, and is ISO 22000 Certified.
