PR TowerPhotoreactor Farm Tower.

Designed for the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) by Gregoire Diehl, Smoothcore Architects. The Photoreactor Farm Tower is an active artifact. The algae fields are an artistic installation made of illuminated vertical green glass tubes with algae in them. By going vertical, you can get a lot more surface area to expose cells to the sunlight.


ClepsydraClepsydra Urban Farming.

Clepsydra was entered into the 2011 Buckminster Fuller Challenge by Bruno Viganò and Florencia Costa. Clepsydra is a new building type – a vertical greenhouse that can be linked to existing or new buildings.  Clepsydra serves as a multi-faceted urban development tool to provide food security and community life.


Green TransformerGreen Transformer.

Designed for the 2010 Seoul International Design Competition by Yi Liu, Luo Jing and Jiang Yu-ning. The Green Transformer is a solar-powered algae refinery that floats on water to extract valuable bio-oil from algae in pools and ponds. It folds itself and the solar panels when it is not in use.


Diatom ProjectThe Diatom Project.

Designed for the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) by Thomas Laureyssens. The installation consists of sculptures of an enlarged diatom stone fossil placed on the desert sand. Part of the diatom consists of solar cells, making it energy producing. Many scientists agree that diatoms might have been the main source of crude oil.

Featured on Awesome Architecture is the Hydrogenase bio hydrogen airship for the future by Vincent Callebaut. Between engineering and biology, Hydrogenase is one of the first projects of bio-mimicry which draws its inspiration from the beauty and the shapes of nature.


Living AlgaeLiving Algae Concept Building.

This tower was designed for the 2010 Taiwan Tower Conceptual International Competition by creators Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham, part of the CRAB team in London. This design won second place. The building is designed to be partially covered with algae and plants attached to the infrastructure of the concept building.
