Elk River sophomore Josh Wolf has a lofty goal — helping to solve the world’s fuel crisis — using a humble tool: algae.In the portable garage that serves as a back-yard laboratory, he has discovered that the application of a very low-level electrical jolt causes algae to release oil. In March, he was among seven finalists in the 2011 International Algae Competition. His rivals included 140 entries from 40 countries; many had corporate or university backing.

The International Algae Competition Abundance Prize and Best Video ($3000) was awarded to Green Loop: Marina City Global Algae Retrofitting, Chicago by Influx_Studio, Mario Caceres and Christian Canonico. This is an algae based strategy for a new sustainable model in urban areas, revisioning one of the most iconic buildings in the Loop of Chicago: Marina City Towers. The proposal submitted by two French architects to retrofit Marina City has won the top prize in the 2011 International Algae Competition. Mario Caceres and Christian Canonico of the design firm Influx_Studio of Paris won the Algae Abundance Prize. A video shows how their proposal would help meet a goal by the Chicago Climate Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 from levels in 1990. Caceres says representatives of industrial companies in the U.S. have expressed interest in their project.
